While you’re away on travel, experiencing issues with your rental car—whether an accident or theft damage—can put a damper on your trip and wallet if you’re not prepared. Fortunately, cardholders with a Chase Freedom-branded credit card have an added layer of protection.
Chase Freedom rental car insurance benefits can offer financial peace of mind if the worst-case scenario happens with your rental vehicle. But the level of coverage you receive can vary, depending on your situation.

Chase’s Freedom rental car collision damage waiver offers customers reimbursement coverage for damage to rental cars when the rental is charged to the card. For example, if your vehicle sustains damage due to a collision while in your possession or due to theft you would be covered.
The following Chase Freedom credit card products offer this card benefit:
Rental car collision damage waiver isn’t available for Chase Freedom Rise® customers.
The benefit starts as soon as the rental is in your control and is in effect for up to 31 straight days. As soon as you’ve returned the vehicle to the rental company, the insurance coverage ends.
To use this insurance protection, the entire car rental transaction must be paid for using your Chase Freedom credit card.
Additionally, the primary renter on the agreement must be the person whose name appears on the card. Other individuals who are listed as additional drivers on your agreement are also protected, as long as you remain the primary renter.
The collision damage waiver covers incidents of auto theft, physical damage and other charges imposed by the auto rental company such as:
The reimbursement benefit varies based on the country you’ve rented a vehicle in and your existing personal auto insurance coverage. If you rented a car in the U.S., and have your own primary car insurance policy, Chase’s rental insurance provides secondary coverage protection. You’ll only be reimbursed for your personal insurance’s deductible and any rental company charges that weren’t reimbursed by your own insurance company.
Conversely, if you don’t have personal car insurance or you rented a car in a different country, the Chase Freedom auto rental benefit offers primary protection. The benefit covers all damage charges for your claim, and valid fees charged by the rental company.
Not all vehicles are eligible for the Chase Freedom rental car insurance benefit. Below are some examples of ineligible vehicles:
The Chase Freedom car rental insurance protection can be a financial safety net if you qualify for the benefit. However, in addition to the restrictions above, the following scenarios are ineligible:
Furthermore, if you’ve violated your auto rental agreement, Chase’s car rental coverage won’t protect you in the event of damage. The takeaway is that rental car insurance covers the car, not you.
This list isn’t exhaustive so if you have questions about your unique situation, contact your Benefits Administrator at 1(888) 320-9656 or call at 1(804) 673-1691 from outside the U.S.
If your rental car encounters damage while in your control, here are the steps to file a reimbursement claim.
Whether you’re renting a car in the U.S. or abroad, Chase Freedom rental car insurance offers an armor of protection for drivers. Just make sure you follow the requirements of this benefit so you’re eligible for a reimbursement if the unexpected occurs.
No, Chase Freedom Student cardholders don’t have access to a rental car insurance benefit. However, other Chase credit card products, like the Chase Freedom Unlimited Card, provide this travel protection.
To activate the waiver, you must decline the supplemental insurance that’s offered by the rental company. The eligible Chase Freedom card must be used to pay for the entire rental, and the person whose name is on the card must be the primary renter on the agreement.
